"Sleep tight" refers to when the pioneers would have to tighten their bed strings before going to sleep. And "don't let the bed bugs bite" is reference to the cups at the bottom of the bed posts. The pioneers would have cups with oil in them placed under the bed posts and would also put oil on the posts to keep the bed bugs out of their straw.
